Working With The Newseum

I finally found the poor, battered piece of paper I had scribble my internship blog on. It was pretty much indecipherable after a week at the bottom of my bag, but I got the gist of what I wanted to say...

Monday through Thursday of Debate Week I worked as a general intern for Gloria Kellum's office. I got to see the filing center first thing Tuesday morning, which was so cool, even if nothing was set up yet... I worked there and at the Union (where the local, uncredentialed press would be working) handing out press passes and setting up interviews with students and faculty.

Friday I did my internship with a pair of guys from the Newseum who weren't in town to cover the debate. They were actually filming a documentary on the impact that digital technology has had on the media. They had spent the week following WAPT-TV from Jackson and a few members of the DM. We spent most of the day shooting footage from the Student Media Center, the Chancellor's press conference in the Lyceum, the Grove and the areas around the Ford Center. During the actual debate we stayed in the filing center and afterwards in Spin Alley. It was weird working with journalists whose job is to cover other journalists, but it was a cool perspective to get.

I had so much fun hanging out with them the day of the debate. They made a 16 hour day seem much shorter than it actually was. They even shot a (rather embarrassing) interview of me outside the SMC that I'm pretty sure will haunt me for life. All in all, I really enjoyed my internship(s) and am so glad that I had this opportunity.
