Being in the Debate Hall

While sitting in the Ford Center I realized that I was watching history happen before my eyes. The last time I had that feeling was in 9th grade when I sat in computer class and watched the second plane hit the tower on 9/11. An hour before the show aired I watched Shepard Smith, Tom Brokaw, Brian Williams, and Katie Couric broadcast live a foot away from each other. Their voice volumes were fighting each other for the power of the best on air voice. As a Broadcast Journalism major it was in a single word, breathtaking. As both Senators walked out on stage the atmosphere became serious. Even the broadcasters turned their chairs around to take part in the action. After a hour and a half of debate the Senators welcomed their wives on stage, shook hands, and left. I walked out with a sense of pride in our University. We had just pulled off the biggest news story all week, aside from the financial situation. It was history and we helped make. We are the University of Mississippi. The host of the first Debate of 2008.
