Witnessing History

Tonight I was proud of my nation. Not because a Democrat was elected to the White House, but because of the outstanding voter turn out and because it seems America has finally come to a place where our awful past can be final laid to rest. At least I think it can. The racist remarks will continue I am sure, but if we all open our eyes and realize something has happened that many did not dream of seeing for another decade. We have a black President-Elect. Throngs of Americans made their way to polling stations today to cast their vote. They were black, white, Latino, Asian, you name it and they made their voices heard. Finally it seems that the color of your skin does not matter. It has always been hard for me to remember that race is an issue for some people, I'm sure it is hard for many in my generation to remember that. We were not raised in times of segregation, our parents were not raised in times of segregation, but history and growing up has made us aware that such a thing had existed and this awareness has, I think pushed us to try and erase what little racism and bigotry is left in the nation. We stood together as a nation tonight, either basking in the light of triumph or nursing defeat and were able to watch history happen. It is important I think for everyone to remember that this moment for all of us will be something important to remember. After all, firsts always are.
