Today, Taiwan High Court ruled that the three men accused of murder, rape and theft who came to be known as the 'Hsichih Trio' (Su Chien-ho, Liu Bing-lang and Chuang Lin-hsun) were NOT guilt, a huge relief to all those who worked on their case.
This article here gives a good summary of the men's ordeal.
The prosecutors have the right to appeal and I am told that the brother of the victim intends to do so. As this is the correct procedure then that is his clear right which I can't begrudge him.
Should the appeal fail I think then that the men should file for compensation for the 12 years they were erroneously incarcerated. NT$1m per year could be a good figure to start with.
Postscript: I didn't hear the President say that their acquittal was against public expectations or opinion - guess that's only for cases involving political opponents. In this case, Ma as then Justice Minister probably did one of the few good deeds in his career by refusing back in the day to sign the men's death warrants.
Congratulations to Mr Su, Mr Liu and Mr Chuang, two of which last year I had the great fortune to spend a very pleasant Sunday afternoon with BBQing in Taipei County. I Hope they can finally put this nightmare behind them for good.
