New Polls - Taiwanese DONT want to unify with China

The Global Views Survey Research Center has polled the following results and these on the President, ECFA and Legislature: (Direct Link Global View Poll Results Pdf)

On TAIWAN'S FUTURE STATUS

Taiwan should not unify with China - 69.9%

Taiwan should unify with China - 15.6%

Taiwan should become a new independent country - 49.1%

Taiwan should not become a new independent country - 34.4%

If both sides had similar economic, political and social conditions, 66.1 percent of respondents said it would be unnecessary for the two sides to unify.

"Overall, respondents were largely in favor of maintaining the “status quo” — 38.2 percent."

Seek independence as soon as possible - 18.5%

Maintain the “status quo” permanently - 13%

Maintain the “status quo” before working toward independence - 10.5%

Maintain the “status quo” before unifying with China - 4.7%

Unification as soon as possible - 2.8%

No specific position on the matter - just over 12%

On PRESIDENT MA'S RATINGS

President Ma Ying-jeou’s (馬英九) approval rating - 32.3% (+ 3.9% from June)

President Ma Ying-jeou’s (馬英九) disapproval rating - 56.2% (+ 0.6% from June)

President Ma Ying-jeou’s (馬英九) trust index - 44.3% (+6% from June)

President Ma Ying-jeou’s (馬英九) distrust index - 42% (-1.3% from June)

On ECFA

Remember Premier Wu Den-yih (吳敦義) said he would like to see 60 percent public approval of the accord before it was signed? - 47.1 percent supported the ECFA, (+ 0.9% from June)

33.9% did not back the agreement (- 2% from June).

19.1% did not give any opinion.

36% - more confidence in Ma’s cross-strait policy after ECFA was signed.

31% - less confidence.

13.7% - the accord did not change their view.

19.5% - did not express any opinion.

63.7% of those who claimed they had read the ECFA's 16 clauses supported it.
33.8% of those who claimed they had read the ECFA's 16 clauses did not support it.

On PERFORMANCE OF KMT IN LEGISLATIVE YUAN

63.7% - not happy with the Chinese Nationalist Party’s (KMT) legislative performance (+ 5.5% from June)

21% - satisfied with the Chinese Nationalist Party’s (KMT) legislative performance (- 0.9% from June)
