Sharing Work and Food - Imagine That

Here's an article by Wayne Roberts of the Toronto Food Policy Council, quoted in full because I don't know how to link to it on Facebook.
SHARING WORK AND FOOD CREATES AN UPSIDE TO THE ECONOMIC DOWN

BY Wayne Roberts

Unlike most people, Thomas Homer-Dixon doesn't think today's world economic crisis is very complicated. He thinks it's very complex, which makes for a world of difference in understanding which government anti-recession programs will fail (most of them) and deciding which ones can help.

Homer-Dixon, who chairs a centre for global systems analysis at the University of Waterloo, is one of the world’s leading thinkers in the field of “complexity theory,” and the author of several international bestsellers, including The Ingenuity Gap and The Upside of Down. He brings a missing dimension to thinking about remedies to the looming economic collapse that that’s so far been excluded from public and media debate. “If ever there was a case of experts not knowing what’s happening, it’s this economic crisis,” he says.

Hang in for the introductory lecture on Chaos Theory 101, and you’ll be able to follow and lead the economics debate in fresh ways.

Homer-Dixon is the first to admit he has no straight-ahead answers to a downturn that’s much more challenging that the Great Depression of the 1930s, to which it’s often unthinkingly compared. “We’ve never seen a collapse on this scale before in an environment of such enormous complexity and such a huge number of unk-unks,” he says, in a reference to the term used during his days working with Pentagon analysts who referred to unknown unknowns.

The way in which a relatively small proportion of mortgage defaults in one country during the fall of 2008 precipitated the collapse of a global economic house of cards expresses a telltale, if seemingly illogical, sign of complex systems in crisis – a very small cause leading to a very huge result, like the final grain of snow or shift of wind that produce a mountain avalanche.

But in Homer-Dixon’s view, that small cause, and even slightly bigger versions of that small cause – the breakdown of integrity in the global financial system, or the inequality that put home purchases beyond the reach of typical families, for example – is only a small part of an overall mix of “cascading failures.” His list of factors converging into a catastrophic perfect storm include intensified inequality, increased global warming, rising resource prices, and the “sheer productivity of capitalism – in many ways the deepest of all causes,” he says, since it produces chronic gluts in desperate search for markets. Together, they overloaded a rigid and “tightly coupled” global financial system that spread uncontrollable wildfires.
“Multiple stresses that reinforced each other” led to “a collapse of assets greater and faster” than anything witnessed during the simpler days of the Great Depression, he says. That’s why simplistic and one-dimensional rhetoric from politicians and pundits about fixing the problem, putting the pieces back together, and managing the crisis betrays a failure to understand what’s going down, he says. “Complex problems require complex solutions. It’s the law of requisite variety. We need a repertoire of responses as complex as the environment. “We must move from management to complex adaptation.”

Just as bodies under stress require core strength in the lower abdomen, economies and societies under shock require sources of core strength, what hip policy experts increasingly refer to as “robustness” and “resilience.” Government policy makers need to focus their view on the prize of supporting resilience in the population. Failure of governments to be on constant alert for the pitfalls of economic giantism or to be on guard for stresses in social resilience “is like not requiring cities to be earthquake-proof,” he says.

“Resilience means helping people to take care of themselves better in tough times,” rather than relying on specialization and expertise, he says, a guideline that puts a community’s ability to feed itself and care for each other at the top of his to-do list.

Here’s how I simplify Homer-Dixon’s analysis, in ways that he may or may not agree with.

When public money is used to keep enterprises afloat, the public has a right to demand that public benefits be spread among the general public. In my opinion, a longstanding (if best-kept secret) of Canadian employment insurance policy should be extended to all public enterprises and bailed-out private enterprises, including car companies and banks. Canada’s federal government allows workers at a company facing lay-offs to opt for everyone sharing the layoff by working a four day week, and everyone sharing the employment insurance by being covered on their one day a week of unemployment. This measure does not cost the employment insurance system a dime, since five people taking a payout for a day is the same as one person taking a payout for a week. It allows a workforce to stay intact for better times, maintains morale among workers and within a community, and protects younger workers with families, a group unlikely to enjoy high seniority.

This simple measure would abolish unemployment overnight, maintain purchasing power in the community, and buy people the time to become more resilient and self-reliant in their own lives, by gardening, cooking from scratch or insulating their walls, for example. It would even give people some time to sleep, the least acknowledged of the crucial determinants of health and well-being.

Only the epidemics of workaholism and every-man-for-himselfishism have kept this obvious low-pain remedy off the agenda for so long.

Having bolstered purchasing power in the community-at-large, the multiplier effect of that purchasing power needs to be captured for public benefit by requiring all government and publicly-bailed-out institutions to purchase local and local-sustainable food, recognizing that the food industry already produces almost as many jobs as the auto industry and can directly employ local people. Since one job for a local farmer commonly leads to five jobs producing farm inputs or off-farm processing, this doable measure is an employment bonanza that also yields major health and environmental benefits. This also fulfils Homer-Dixon’s call for self-reliant and unplugged systems that remove essentials of life from the vagaries of uncontrollable forces.

This depression does not have to hurt. Get beyond the complications into the complexity, and discover what Homer-Dixon calls “the upside to down.”

Greg Norman is the first to wake up and smell the (7-11 brand) Coffee...

If you are like a lot of folks, you are just glad to have a steady source of income - and would not be totally pi$ed if your boss said, "we need you to take a pay cut in order to guarantee that you and ALL of your co-workers get to keep their jobs". Meanwhile, we read everyday that pro athletes are making ever increasing demands for even more millions of dollars (can you hear me 'Quan ? Manny ? ) - seemingly TOTALLY unaware of a worldwide recession that scares the hell out of most normal folks.

Well - SOMEONE in the pro athlete ranks has finally woken up to reality. Who is that someone ? None other than the Shark - Greg Norman.... According to a report out of Brisbane (that's in Australia, ya'll...), The Great White One states ``Prize money's being scaled back in Europe, I wouldn't be surprised if prize money's scaled back in the U.S. just out of respect to every citizen and taxpayer over there who's suffering dramatically,'' the two-time British Open champion was quoted as saying Wednesday on the Australian Broadcasting Corp. Website. ``It seems like on the PGA Tour the players are still playing for a million dollars first week, like they're recession-proof." He further states ``I think there's got to be a lot of sensitivity shown. If I was PGA Commissioner that's what I would be recommending.''

Hats off to Greg Norman for recognizing that we are now living in a VERY different world than even a year ago. As far as the rest of the pro athletes who have not figured this out yet - well, ya better look around dude. Remember, it all starts with the CONSUMER who creates DEMAND for your product or service.

Hmmm - maybe that 7-11 coffee doesn't taste so bad after all....

P.S. - Mr. Tim - are you listening ????

Serviço estofador / Upholsterer

c

Night Putting with Laci Underall - The Cindy Morgan Interview

The title sounds like a cryptic line from "Wall Street" (think "Blue Horseshoe loves Anacot Steel) - but it's true... Cindy Morgan, the real Laci Underall of Caddyshack fame has recently been bitten by the Golf bug. For more insights into "Laci", what she has been up to, and her fond memories of making Caddyshack, keep reading, because Cindy was kind enough to sit down with us this week for a chat.

Believe me fellas, you will want to hear what she has to say-you may still have a shot...

THE INTERVIEW

Judge Smails: Welcome (back) to Bushwood, Laci - it's been a long time since we have seen you around here.
Cindy: Uh, my name is Cindy Morgan - Laci Underall was a CHARACTER that I played in the movie - by the way, why are your eyes glazed over ?
Judge Smails / Me: (coming to my senses) -uh, oh, of course....sorry. Cindy, thanks for taking time to talk to us here at Bushwood CC. Let's get started - sorry for that momentary lapse....

  1. How did you get the role of Laci Underall ? Well, I am a Chicago girl, and prior to working in film I was an on-air radio personality at a Chicagoland station. After a while, I decided to try acting, so I moved to Los Angeles, hired an agent, and started looking for work. Believe it or not, I scored the Caddyshack role within my first 8 months in the business.
  2. Who else was a candidate for the role ? As I understand it, there was one other strong candidate who had actually been promised the role - Sarah Holcomb (girlfriend of Brian Doyle Murray, and ultimately Danny Noonan's on-screen love interest Maggie). I did not find out about that until the last audition, and by then I had completely decided that I had to take an "all or nothing " approach to getting the role.
  3. What is one thing that you have in common with Laci ? Hmmmm, that's a good one. Well, I went to Catholic School for 12 years, so I cannot say that I had a lot of "real life" experiences that would have rivaled Laci's. However, we all have a "fantasy side", and that's what I drew on to create Laci. Laci likes to have fun with people, and always keep them wondering what she will do next - she enjoys life to it's fullest. I am fortunate that people found me believable portraying that in the role.
  4. Your character Laci personified "SEXY" for an entire generation of (us) men - how did that effect your personal life going forward ? Quite a lot, actually. I did not work for over a year after Caddyshack - and there is an interesting story behind that. When I took the role, I was also working as the "Irish Spring" girl in their commercials - so my image was very important. I was aware that the script has a nude scene in it - which I was ok with, because I knew that still photos could not be captured from the film(at that time), and that was all I was concerned about. Imagine my surprise when I heard that a Playboy photographer was going to be on set when we were filming the scene. The short version is that I put my foot down, and said that only the camera guy, the director, and the two people in the scene were going to be on set - or I would walk. I eventually won the argument - but it cost me. Any mention of "Laci" or Cindy Morgan was removed from the promotional materials, and I was sort of "black balled" in the business for a while, but I still know that I did the right thing.
  5. When you are out in public, do people ever call you "Laci", or shout out old Caddyshack lines ? At the market - no, but at public appearances, people often call me "Laci". The Caddyshack references don't start until we get to the "back 9" in Charity events and the guys playing have had a couple (dozen) beers... it gets a little rowdy then !
  6. Is Chevy Chase really that funny ? Absolutely - he is hilarious. I was very lucky to have most of my scenes with Chevy - he is a really smart guy and his wit as sharp on and off camera.
  7. Do you play golf ? I JUST started 2 years ago. My putting and chipping are good, and I am working on hitting my tee shots better now...but I really enjoy playing.
  8. Tell us something about filming Caddyshack that will surprise us : Caddyshack was filmed shortly after "Animal House" was released, and you probably noticed that there were a few folks in Caddyshack who were also in Animal House (trivia item - Dean Wormer's promiscuous daughter was none other than Sara Holcomb - aka Maggie, the Irish lass of Danny's affection). Filming Caddyshack was a bit like Animal House on the golf course - no one had ANY idea that the movie would be a hit, but we were all having a REALLY good time.
  9. Men all over the world want to know what kind of guy snagged Laci Underall - tell us about him: I am still looking for Mr. Perfect - I've had a number of special people in my life - but have not found the right guy yet. (ed. note - she is still HOT !)
  10. We all know that much of the script was improvised - tell us the funniest moment that you remember: Watching Ted Knight and Rodney Dangerfield work together was unbelievably funny. It was Rodney's first movie, and he was sweating every scene - nervous as could be. Ted was really getting into the whole "Judge Smails" thing (ed. note - I know, so was I). Probably the funniest thing was watching how Rodney (who was only originally supposed to have a cameo role) eventually stole the whole show, while Ted sort of smoldered - I think some of the frustration you saw the Judge express toward Al/Rodney was real !
  11. You spent much of the movie in a very memorable outfit - a rather formfitting "tennis outfit" that made many a teenage boy feel....well, never mind, tell us about the outfit. SLOWLY : Ha Ha - you got a little nervous there yourself,Cash. Remember this was 1979, and women all over America were "braless and proud" - so my wardrobe was nothing that was uncommon at the time, it just seems to have "stuck" in the memory of a lot of people (ed. note - no shizz - more like BRANDED )
  12. Two activities that Laci enjoyed - skinny skiing and attending bull fights on acid - which one is your favorite ? Ha - well, in real life I've done neither - but I am SURE that Laci was quite experienced at both of them...
  13. Are you still a blonde ? Absolutely....
  14. Who was your favorite cast member ? I really enjoyed working with a lot of them, but if I had to pick one, it would be Bill Murray. Watching him become "Carl" was simply hilarious.
  15. Swimming pool scene - you wore a one- piece. Why wasn't was a bikini ever considered ? If you really think about Laci, she sort of took the "classic Country Club look" and then pushed the flirty side at every turn. The one- piece fit her personality - a bikini would have been too "obvious" for Laci. Plus, it's what the wardrobe folks wanted to use...(ed. note DAMN them!)
Cindy - Thanks for taking time to speak with us today. It has been a huge pleasure spending time with you. Check out more on Cindy here.

Mickelson takes fashion advice, torches Riviera

Earlier this week, Philly Mick broke out the WIDE white belt with his all black ensemble (perhaps to emphasize his new found "svelteness"???) - much to the chagrin of many people. He was taken to task for his attempt at fashion forwardness - after all, we expect Phil to remain the traditionalist. What's next, DL III in a visor and gel-spiked highlights ala Poulter ?

Phil was interviewed Friday night, and placed the blame for his fashion faux pas squarely on his wife. According to the Phil "Ame picks out all my clothes - they have these little animals sewed on the inside, and she just matches 'em up". Geez - after seeing her selection of footwear at the Ryder Cup this year, I'm not sure that's such a good idea.

On Saturday, Phil was back to a more traditional look (and a BLACK belt), and put a medieval style beat down on Riviera CC - scorching the field with a 62. In the post round interview, Phil attributed his success to the sage fashion advice he received from noted stylist to the stars, Shane B. Said Phil "I never knew how that WHITE BELT emphasized my, uh, pecs until Shane called me on it. I owe it all to him." When asked about his attire for tomorrow, he grinned slyly and said " Camo, baby, Camo"...

Worst Headline Ever

If there were an annual worst headline award, The Sun would probably win pretty much every year. Today's paper screamed "'Enormous' fraud at City Hall"

It makes it sound as though the city council or mayor has been caught doing something corrupt or fraudulent. Reading the article, one finds out there were 9 civil servants (working in social services) who are accused of insurance scams with Manulife, the city's supplier of health insurance. They allegedly made fake claims. This is being investigated, has been turned over to the Toronto Police right now, and the city sent the accused employees home (with pay, which is necessary when a charge is unproven).

Rob Ford, (the only councillor interviewed in this article on the same topic, opined "I've always said corruption is rampant at City Hall," he said. "I believe this is the tip of the iceberg."

The city is scrutinized in ways the federal and provincial governments aren't. The city is more efficient than any other level of government - it has to be - and yet, it is constantly being accused of waste. Our city budget is well in line with other large North American cities, it supplies services many other cities don't have to (due to good old Mike Harris), and every penny is watched. If 9 low-level employees of a company which employed over 50,000 were to scam their health insurance, nobody would claim the company itself was corrupt.

Audio Meridian F80

The F80 is a small desktop all-in-one home entertainment system designed and built by Meridian Audio in collaboration with Ferrari. It incorporates a 2.1 speaker setup, high-quality amplifier and digital sound processor, CD player, DAB/FM tuner, DVD player and a healthy selection of auxiliary audio inputs for plugging in your Personal Media Player (PMP) or other external audio sources. The whole lot fits in a package that measures just 408 x 230 x 185mm so fits comfortably on most window sills, bedside tables or TV cabinets. Of course, given the eye-watering price and eye-catching looks, you may not want it in any of the above places but rather have it stood high on a pedestal in the centre of your living room, both to really show it off and to keep it from the reach of children and pets.

The version we were sent is finished in a resplendent bright yellow (red, black, silver, and white are also available), or Modena Giallo, to give its official name. Whatever it's called, though, it is most certainly beautiful. The colour is rich and bright and the glossy finish is spotless. If the only impetus Ferrari had in the F80's design was doing the paintjob, it would still justify the tie-in.

You'll be glad to hear, though, that this isn't the case. As well as lending its painting skills to proceedings, Ferrari was also key in developing the low-resonance, high mass composite materials that are used in the chassis. These materials were needed to enable the construction of such a small device - especially given its chosen curved shape - that could maintain the audio quality that Meridian is associated with. Its rigidity and density quells resonances and eliminates the possibility of rattling that you might normally associate with a plastic construction.

With only 6,5Kg, this weight combined with the unit's mains only operation pretty much kills the F80's portability, despite its compact looks. It's ok for moving from room to room or taking outside for a barbecue but a ghettoblaster replacement, this is not.

Bushwood CC - "Movin On Up"...

Not unlike George and Weezy Jefferson, we here at Bushwood are "movin on up" with a whole new look . It's not quite a "dee-luxe apartment in the sky", but it's damn close.

Hope you like it, because your dues are going up to cover the cost...

Many thanks to the talented folks at 22 Lilies designs - Jen, you are a sweetheart.

‘Interaksi Dialektis’ Anak Sekolah Kejuruan

Pengantar

Penutup

Wallahu’alam.

Call for Submissions to Briarpatch

I like this magazine and it seems they are looking for submissions for their upcoming edition "How I learned to stop destroying the planet and love the global recession"
What if the economic recession we're presently experiencing
is not just a regrettable temporary setback in the never-ending
march of growth-fuelled prosperity, but the beginning of a
painful but ecologically necessary process of scaling back
our footprint to a more sustainable level?

How would we manage the decline so as to ensure the burdens
are shared out equitably? How would we go about reorganizing
our society and economy around conservation and community
well-being rather than economic growth and short-term profit?

The revolution envisioned above would require a fundamental
transformation in every aspect of our lives -- our jobs, our
homes, our food system, our arts and entertainment, etc.
It's certainly beyond the scope of a single issue of Briarpatch
to describe, but in our July/August 2009 issue, we hope to
sketch out some of the broad contours and specific
opportunities so our readers can get to work on the rest.

What principles should guide our efforts to reorganize our
lives and communities on a human scale? What initiatives
already underway deserve to be profiled, celebrated, and
imitated? What can we learn from what other people are doing
in other parts of the world? What books and films shed light
on the key issues and should be reviewed? How can our
efforts to cope with the global recession pave the way to
a more stable and sustainable future?

If you've got something to contribute to this discussion,
then we want to hear from you. We are looking for articles,
essays, investigative reportage, news briefs, project profiles,
interviews with luminary thinkers, reviews, poetry, humour,
artwork & photography that explore how we can unplug
from the growth machine and cope with the global recession.

We seek to cast a broad net in our approach, profiling
initiatives in energy alternatives, housing and urban
planning, transportation, job (re)training, ecological
economics and much more -- this is not an exhaustive list!

Queries are due by March 23, 2009. If your query is
accepted, first drafts are due by May 1, 2009. Your query
should outline what ground your contribution will cover and
include an estimated word count and a short writing sample.

Please review our submission guidelines before submitting
your query. Send your queries to:
editor AT briarpatchmagazine DOT com.

We reserve the right to edit your work (with your active
involvement) and cannot guarantee publication. Briarpatch
pays $0.05/word. http://www.briarpatchmagazine.com

Some of my blogging friends (and the non-bloggy ones too) have certainly been opining on exactly this topic - perhaps one of you wants to submit something. If I can get my act together, I just might as well.

Panjang jika saya tulis uraian cerita mereka berdua. Pengalaman mereka selama kurang lebih satu semester disana coba saya singkat saja.

1. Pedalaman Lampung (perbatasan Lampung- Sumatra Selatan)

The gift of omnipresence is reserved for a special few, such as the Samurai standard lamp, whose spectacular dimensions mean it can light two adjoining rooms simply by moving its long arm and with no need to move the base.Reserved for large rooms, the Samurai lamp becomes the focus of attention as it presides over the scene from a height. The object ceases to be merely functional and plays a key role in the decoration thanks to its round, sculpted lines. This model, designed by Robby Cantarutti, comes in three stunning finishes with plenty of personality: white, black or red lacquer. The Samurai lamp is 290 cm long and 208 cm in height, it has a diffuser of methacrylate and runs on an E27 30W bulb (Osram Dulux EL).Floor lamp L 290 x H 208 cm5320-03White lacquerMetacrylate difusser 2 x 2G11 24W Max Compact Fluorescent5320-04Black lacquerMetacrylate difusser 2 x 2G11 24W Max Compact Fluorescent5320-06Red lacquerMetacrylate difusser 2 x 2G11 24W Max Compact Fluorescent.
