Mobile firefighters are considering joining the Alabama Education Association in a legal effort to overturn the recent restrictions passed this past December by the GOP legislature making "payroll deduction" of dues to organizations involved in "political activity" illegal by suing the City of Mobile:
The Mobile Firefighters' union has no choice but to sue the city in order to force the municipality to deduct dues from union members’ paychecks, Paul Cumbaa, president of the Mobile local, said Wednesday.

The city stopped collecting such dues for the union after the state enacted a law banning payroll deductions for any "membership organization which uses any portion of the dues for political activity."

Given the city’s intransigence on the matter, Cumbaa said after his plea was rejected, the Mobile local has no choice but to join other union locals in suing the state and their municipalities, which are enforcing it.
