History in the making

We have been told countless times that this year's presidential election is one of historical proportions. We have an African American presidential candidate and a woman vice presidential candidate. If either party is elected, America will have a first in the White House.

The American people have also recently been told that we are experiencing yet another possibly history-making event: the bailout bill. According to The New York Times, the $700 billion government intervention could be the biggest the world has ever seen. Furthermore, the economic crisis that this bill is supposed to be saving us from supposedly have turned into the deepest crisis America has seen since the Great Depression - making it the most severe crisis in our generation's history.

Of course, we have many people telling us that we have to pass this bill in order to save our economy, and it has been passed. But it is still not without its critics. I know nothing is ever unanimously decided upon, but for something that seems to have little of the American people's approval. According to a CBS News poll, 39 percent of Americans believe the plan will do little to help the nation as a whole.

So, knowing that this bill's passage is still a point of great contention and that we seem to be standing at a critical turning point in history, worries me quite a bit. The bill is already passed - possibly one of the biggest bills in our nation's history. I don't think anyone knows its ultimate consequences. We are standing at the top of a hill, and our journey down will certainly make history. I'm just nervous about the ride.
