In like a lion and out like a lamb

With a whirlwind force the debate has come and gone. And I can say with confidence that Ole Miss has not experienced such a media frenzy since the 60’s, with the integration of the University. Every major media outlet and even local stations were present to witness history in the making.

During the presidential debate, I was assigned to intern for Gloria Kellum who is the Vice Chancellor for University Relations at Ole Miss. The day before the debate we heard rumors that McCain might not show. Was this a political ruse for McCain?.... Well, the debate happened and it was truly an amazing opportunity that I took full advantage of. My eyes and ears were open to everything. I mainly worked in the media tent or the “media filing center.” I acted as the Mississippi hospitality, meaning when the media checked in I would direct them to their seats and give them any information they needed about the University.

Friday was incredible; the once empty 1,000 person tent was completely full! As everyone sat with anticipation for the candidates to show, I snuck out to watch McCain and Obama arrive. The debate began at 8:00 and as I watched, this overwhelming since of pride came over me. The University that I attend was chosen to host the first 2008 presidential debate and I was chosen to help. I wouldn’t have traded my experience for anything.
